Pink Lakes .. a Strange Spectacle.
For those that want to see something truly unusual, come and see the Pink Lake for yourselves, a strange spectacle which stands out dramatically from the rest!
As with our Coastal Cliffs flight we take off from Kalbarri airport and fly towards the town and low along the beachfront before heading at cliff top height past the coastal cliffs with their lovely red sedimentary rock colours.
On past the surfing beach, we reach Red Bluff, Rainbow Gorge and a series of connecting gorges including the natural bridge.
The Tumblagooda Sandstone that makes up the majority of the Kalbarri region is what you will see both from the sky and the ground in the impressive red cliffs rising more than 100m cut by the sea.
These cliffs are part of what was once was (400-500 million years ago) a large tidal sand flats system which irregularly bordered a sizeable river plain spanning around 100km. The tidal range is thought to have been larger than it is today with the red and white successive layers of sand bedding stained by iron oxides formed in the oxygen rich environment.
The sequences seen on the coastal cliffs are higher up the stratigraphic sequence (younger) than the gorges in-land and show much larger scale bedding deposition than the up-stream gorges due to a higher energy coastline than the wide, flat braided river plain sequences that deposited the thin beds in the river gorges.
We continue past the cliffs along the white beaches of Lucky Bay until we climb the aircraft ready to view the pink lake from the best vantage point the air! After circling the Pink lake we head back along the coastal cliffs and over town before returning to Kalbarri airport.
